Remanufactured Hybrid Drive Battery

Drive Motor Battery Packs, often referred to as High-Voltage Batteries or Hybrid Batteries, are used in Hybrid Electric (HEV), Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) and Electric (EV) vehicles to power the electric propulsion motors. These batteries are recharged through regenerative braking, a plug-in charger (if the vehicle is equipped), or an internal combustion engine (HEV only).Over time, the Drive Motor Battery pack eventually loses its ability to hold a charge or suffers an internal failure. At CARDONE, we know that hybrid & electric vehicles are special, just like their forward-thinking owners and talented service technicians. It’s our mission to support these earth-friendly and high-performance vehicles with rigorously engineered and tested parts that are remanufactured to O.E. or better performance. CARDONE’s Drive Motor Battery Packs are remanufactured to utilize the best-available components and strictest testing requirements to get your hybrid or electric vehicle back on the road at a fraction of the O.E. replacement cost. CARDONE has been an aftermarket pioneer in electrical products since we first opened our doors in 1970. As the surge of new hybrid and full electric powertrains begins to gain momentum, CARDONE is already out in front with our ReCharged line of products specifically tailored to meet the demands of this rapidly expanding category.

After using proprietary module pairing algorithms, the assembled battery pack is balanced and subjected to a gauntlet of charging, energy, and discharging tests to verify that each module is operating at a consistent efficiency.

As equipped, the Battery Electronic Control Units, relays, fans, and other internal components are renewed and 100% tested to guarantee proper function and cooling of the battery pack.

Battery packs are shipped in reusable containers to improve the product’s overall sustainability and facilitate easier core returns.

If equipped, sheet metal covers are powder-coated to increase corrosion protection and appearance.

New Cell Battery Packs: The battery pack has been upgraded with NEW battery cells that provide equal or higher capacity than OEM.

Renewal Cell Battery Packs: Each battery module is thoroughly validated through more than 20 hours of advanced testing protocols prior to acceptance for use in a remanufactured battery pack.

Terminal nuts and connectors are electro-tin-plated to prevent corrosion and improve conductivity.

FAQs - A full state-of-charge would be 80%, however, o.e. manufacturers have designed the drive motor battery packs to operate at approximately 60% state of charge (soc) in order to permit brake regeneration and healthy charge/ discharge cycles without overheating. our batteries are shipped ready for operation at a 50-70% soc, depending on the intended used of the battery.
FAQs - Always make sure the “ready” light is off on the instrument panel or multi-function display, the ignition or power button is off, and the key is out of the vehicle before you begin any service or repair work. if the vehicle has a remote keyless entry system, remove the key from the vehicle and keep the keyless fob at least 20 feet away to prevent accidental starts and/or trouble codes from being set. the negative terminal at the 12-volt auxiliary battery must be disconnected and the service plug must be removed. if equipped with a service switch, the switch must be in the “off” position. after removing the service plug or toggling the service switch, wait at least five to ten minutes to allow time for the capacitors in the inverter to discharge. then use a cat iii digital multi-meter to measure voltage at the terminals on the high-voltage battery. battery voltage should be below 30 v dc before beginning high-voltage battery service work. the electrical motor/generator in a hybrid or electric vehicle can generate voltage when pushed with its wheels on the ground. if the vehicle needs to be moved after high-voltage system work has been started, use dollies under the front and rear wheels.
FAQs - As batteries sit in storage, the modules being to lose charge and fall out of balance. we’ve included stickers on both the shipping case and actual battery that clearly indicate when the battery was last charged at the factory as well as the last date it should be installed. if a battery is installed beyond the stated shelf-life period, it will likely operate normally at first, but could be prone to premature failure. do not install batteries that have exceeded their “do not install after” date. contact the battery supplier for a replacement. do not store this battery in temperatures over 95°f or the battery may not safely reach its full storage shelf life. do not attempt to charge the battery while in storage. battery charging must only take place through the high-voltage battery charging system in the vehicle. never attempt to charge the high-voltage battery using external charging equipment; serious injury, battery damage and property loss can result.
FAQs - Battery packs usually contain more than 20 modules that must perform and behave similarly. if even 1 module starts to deviate too far from the rest, the battery pack will trigger a fault code. when remanufacturing a battery, it is highly desirable to match battery modules that have the most identical profiles as possible. benchtop battery module swapping relies on a handful of used modules from another source that may not be best matched to the remaining modules in the original pack. there is a very low chance that the replacement modules have similar profiles, and there is an increased likelihood of future issues. using proprietary profile-matching methods, our engineers select battery modules from our library of more than 7,000 pieces, all of which have been thoroughly profiled and rigorously tested to meet o.e. performance. this library is a distinct advantage and cannot be easily replicated in a benchtop environment.and/or trouble codes from being set. the negative terminal at the 12-volt auxiliary battery must be disconnected and the service plug must be removed. if equipped with a service switch, the switch must be in the “off” position.
FAQs - By purchasing a remanufactured battery, you are making an earth-friendly choice. we will reuse all repairable materials from your battery core and recycle or safely dispose of all scrap materials in a responsible manner. first, core batteries are disassembled to separate battery pack electronic components from the o.e. battery modules which are processed for potential renewal. all battery pack internal components, including electronic control modules, relays, and cooling fans, are 100% tested to ensure functionality and repaired, if necessary. sheet metal battery pack covers are cleaned and powder-coated to improve appearance and corrosion resistance. battery terminal nuts and connector plates are cleaned to remove any corrosive residue and are electro-tin-plated to improve conductivity. to complete a remanufactured battery pack, a profile-matched set of renewed or new battery cell modules are properly balanced and recharged to a common level to ensure superior performance. all components and housings are reassembled with the battery modules, and the completed pack is placed in a reusable shipping container.
FAQs - For most hybrid and electric vehicles you can check for battery pack related codes using a generic scanner. a factory scan tool, or equivalent, with the correct operating software will be necessary for performing diagnostic procedures, configuration and programming. the p0a80 and the p0a70 are the most common trouble codes related to battery pack failure. when a “p0a80” is set, it means that the powertrain control module has detected a malfunction in the hybrid vehicle battery management system (hvbms). if the battery control module determines one of the battery packs is starting to fail, it will set code “p0a80”. a p0a70 code could indicate a poor connection at the battery pack, a problem with unbalanced modules within the battery pack or a battery pack electronic control unit (ecu) issue.
FAQs - High-voltage batteries can cause significant bodily harm, and we recommend that only trained professionals with proper safety equipment and diagnostic tools attempt to service these parts. always wear safety glasses, class “o” linemen gloves rated @ 1,000 volts and leather outer protectors over the linemen gloves. gloves must be certified, and expiration date must be current. always remove jewelry and use insulated hand tools. other forms of personal protective equipment such as an insulated safety hook, googles, face shield, apron, and shoes should be considered. always follow o.e. manufacturer’s safety procedures.
FAQs - In general, battery packs become less responsive to charging and discharging over time. to maximize the life of your battery, follow these steps: make sure the vehicle is being driven regularly. batteries are most reliable when charged and discharged through continuous driving in stop and go traffic. if the vehicle is not a daily driver or is being put into long-term storage, follow the o.e. manufacturer’s recommendations for maintaining the battery pack’s charge to prevent excessive discharge. make sure the battery pack ventilation system is clean and functioning properly. battery packs perform best at room temperature. exposure to temperatures outside of room temperature tends to shorten the life expectancy of the battery over time. check that the drive motor inverter cooling system is functioning properly. if the inverter is too hot, it will not properly recharge the battery during regenerative braking or engine charging cycles. this will cause the battery to prematurely fail.
FAQs - It only takes one battery module in the pack for the battery to become unbalanced or stop functioning. additionally, internal electronic and cooling components within the battery pack can stop operating properly, despite healthy battery modules, resulting in battery pack failure. a failed battery pack may only be one symptom of the root cause of a problem in a hybrid or electric vehicle. hybrid and electric vehicle powertrains are highly interdependent systems, and only a trained professional can properly diagnose a battery issue versus a poorly-performing inverter or ground fault.
FAQs - Most battery packs contain at least 28 separate battery modules, but it only takes one failed or unbalanced module to cause the battery to stop working properly. many core battery modules are still viable and capable of o.e. performance. all modules obtained during core disassembly are subjected to 20 hours of increasingly rigorous levels of testing. only modules that have significant useful service life and superior performance characteristics are profiled and placed into the renewed battery cell library. unacceptable battery modules are safely sent to a recycler for proper disposal or material recovery.
FAQs - No. we recommend that only the o.e. manufacturer’s on-board systems be used to recharge a drive motor battery. attempting to bypass these charging systems with third-party chargers could cause damage to the battery, bodily harm, or property damage.
FAQs - Our engineers have sourced new battery cells from the world’s leading suppliers that meet an exacting set of stringent specifications. after receipt of these new battery cells, we age them to expose any undetected flaws, and then subject the cells to a rigorous gauntlet of charging, energy, and discharging tests to ensure peak performance.
FAQs - The hybrid or electric vehicle’s original safety or service plug can be reused with the replacement drive motor battery. if this original plug is damaged or misplaced, a replacement service plugs can be purchased.
FAQs - The most common indicators of battery pack degradation are lower than average miles per gallon, shorter operation in electric mode vs gas mode and a lower than normal state of charge (soc) indicator on the multifunction display. the driver may also notice the internal combustion engine starting more often and running at a higher than normal idle speed in an attempt to charge the battery. if the soc goes below 20%, the vehicle will shut down and will not re-start until a replacement battery pack is installed.
FAQs - Yes. to prevent false positives, it is recommended to clear all dtcs that were previously set after installing the battery and perform a road test. it can take up to 100 miles of driving for the vehicle to go through the necessary drive cycles in order for the mpgs to display accurately.
